Music For Your Wedding

Music will be a large part of your Wedding Day, either for a Church or Civil Ceremony, Drinks Reception, Wedding Breakfast or Evening Reception.

So, where do you start?

How do you find professional musicians or Disco for your Special Day.?

Your Venue - Most venues have a list of musicians who work with them, they are usually not allowed to recommend. However,  you should find that most of the suppliers on the list work a lot at the venue and wouldn't be on the list if the venue didn't know and trust them.

Telephone Directory/Yellow Pages - always good as the performers are usually based locally.

Internet - type Wedding Music and your county and pour yourself a glass of wine! There are lots of locally based Internet sites now, as with Food and local producers, Brides and Grooms also want their musicians to be Home Grown!

Wedding Fairs - Fantastic for ideas and quite often you will find musicians playing - instant. Also most have Free Entry so all it takes is your time. Don't be afraid to stop and chat, that's what the suppliers are there for - to advise.

Classical, Jazz, Traditional, Pop, Harpists, String Quartet, Piano Trio, Guitarist, Opera Singer, Gospel Choir, Steel Band, Jazz Trio………………..the list is endless. Don't be phased by the numerous perfomers and varied music available. Get cd's from the artists and listen to the kind of music that they perform, then narrow down your choice.

For a lot of Brides and Grooms this will be the first time that they will have had to think about the kind of music that you like, and the kind of music that you don't like.!
Booking a String Quartet, Opera Singer or Harpist may seem like a daunting task when you don't listen to that kind of music, this is where the professional musician comes in.

Most performers will have a cd, biography and repertoire list. Alternatively, they can arrange to meet you or have you come to one of their performances. It is always recommended that you meet the artists beforehand and see them perform, cd's are not always reflective of what a musician can do and you may be pleasantly surprised that you recognise some of the Music, even if you don't know the names of the pieces. Professional musicians are happy to advise you on music, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Music can create the perfect ambience for your Big Day, create a theme (Italian, Caribbean, 20's, 60's, lively, relaxed, ……….the list is endless.

From a solo soprano at the Ceremony to a Harp, String Quartet, Jazz Trio or Pianist playing for your drinks reception and Wedding Breakfast. Create a flow for the music with one part of the day leading into another, for example Solo Pianist for the Ceremony leading into a Jazz Trio for the reception, or String Quartet for the Ceremony and reception leading into a Big Band for the Evening.

It is also important (and something that a lot of Brides and Grooms forget) is that you also need some silence at points during the day as your guests will get tired of listening. Listening is an art in itself and takes energy which you and your guests want to save for the dancing!

After the formalities are over, the evening can come alive with a Pop, Swing, Ceilidh, Barn Dance or Steel Band.

Thinking about your budget and the style of music you like about a year before your Wedding will give you a wide choice of musicians, you will probably be surprised how early they get booked up.

Decide what you want them to wear, formal or casual, and any colours you want them to wear or avoid. Then just sit back knowing that the music at your Wedding will make your day extra special.

Here are some examples of pieces which work for Wedding Ceremony in Church :

Entrance of the Bride :

  • Wagner : Bridal March from Lohengrin
  • Handel : Water Music or Fireworks Music
  • Handel : Arrival of the Queen of Sheba
  • Charpentier : Prelude from Te Deum
  • Purcell : Rondeau from Abdelazar
  • Purcell : Trumpet Tune
  • Clarke : Trumpet Voluntary ( Prince of Denmark's March)
  • Pachelbel : Canon in D

Signing of the Register :

  • Bach : Jesu, joy of man's desiring
  • Bach : Ave Maria
  • Schubert : Ave Maria
  • Elgar : Chanson de Matin
  • Bach : Air
  • Handel : Rejoice greatly (Messiah)

This is also the ideal time to have a Soprano or Tenor soloist with repertoire :

  • Bach, Schubert or Mascagni  : Ave Maria
  • Mozart : Laudate Dominum
  • Franck : Panis Angelicus
  • Bach : Sheep may safely graze
  • Handel : Where'er you walk
  • Traditional : She moved through the Fair
  • Mozart : Alleluja
  • Rutter : A Gaelic Blessing
  • Amazing Grace
  • Puccini : O mio babbino caro (Soprano)
  • Puccini : Nessun Dorma (Tenor)
  • Schubert : Bliss
  • Weber : Und ob die Wolke (Wedding Aria from Der Freischutz)
  • Con Te Partiro (originally sung by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli)
  • Lloyd Webber : All I ask of You
  • Offenbach : Belle Nuit

Exit of the Bridal Party :

  • Mendelssohn : Wedding March from Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Widor : Toccata from Symphony No 5.
  • Klarg-Elert : Now thank we all our God
  • Verdi : Grand March (Aida)
  • Vierne : Finale (1st Symphony)

These pieces are standard Organ repertoire which most organists and soloists will have. Always speak to your Organist and soloist about his or her own suggestions as there may be many more that they have tucked up their sleeves. They can also help you with Hymns. Also most high street music shops will have Wedding Music cd's at reasonable prices, or visit your local library.

Also check with the Vicar or Priest as some will only allow religious pieces to be performed.

For civil ceremonies the music to be played depends on the musicians that you have booked. What sounds wonderful on a Harp will not sound the same on a saxophone. Work with the artist -  get a list of their repertoire and don't be afraid to ask if they can arrange your favourites.

I hope that this short insight has taken a little of the fear out of organising your music, don't be afraid of music, it's there to enhance your Day.
